Faithorn Farrell Timms was appointed by the London Borough of Sutton to provide full Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying, design and technical specification services for the Key Stage 2 Expansion and Refurbishment of St Elphege`s Junior School.
The works comprised:
- The construction of a new two-storey flat roof timber-clad double-glazed modular building unit, providing the school with four new classrooms
- The full refurbishment of three existing ground floor classrooms and the adjacent reception area
- To design and construct a new single-storey link corridor to enhance access and egress routes to the school assembly hall
- External landscaping works to the rear school playground including resurfacing the area with tarmac and adding a range of flowerbeds to improve the aesthetics
To minimize disruption to the teaching programme, two single-storey Portacabins were assembled on site and used as temporary classrooms whilst the existing three were in the process of being refurbished.
The new modular unit was designed and constructed to connect directly to the existing two-storey modular unit, which was erected in 2014.
Traditional block-based forms of construction were employed to construct the new classrooms, which included the installation of new double glazing and decorative repairs.
Ceilings were constructed using Gedina E-ceiling panels with T15 profile type to match the existing ceiling grids.
New lighting was also installed to include recessed LED emergency lighting.
The works were carefully phased to ensure there was minimum disruption to the school programme during term times.
The project was successfully delivered on programme and within budget. The school were highly delighted with the end product.
