Apprentice Spotlight: David Lam, IT Support Apprentice

11 February 2025

Meet David, our IT Support Apprentice.

What is your current role, and how long have you been with FFT?

My role is IT Support Apprentice, where I offer support for all things IT within the company. I’ve been with FFT for 9 months, and it has really flown by.”

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

“It’s a great way to learn and use my skills at the same time. I get real work experience, build my confidence, and learn from experienced people.”

What makes FFT a great place to complete an apprenticeship?

“I couldn’t have asked for a better employer for this apprenticeship. The people are friendly, the leadership is great, and they’ve given me plenty of opportunities to learn, which has helped me grow and progress in my career.”

What is your favourite part of your role?

“My favourite part of my role is interacting with people, helping them, and solving problems. It gives me a sense of achievement and I enjoy the connections I make.”

What has been the highlight of your apprenticeship so far?

“I’ve been learning something new every day, but the biggest highlight so far was completing a project where I had to learn and use a program to generate massive amounts of data into a presentable report. Starting from scratch, encountering difficulties, and solving them along the way made the end result even more rewarding.”

What’s been the biggest challenge of your apprenticeship so far?

“The biggest challenge of my apprenticeship so far has been time management. I’ve been so focused and interested in my daily work that I’ve sometimes neglected my apprenticeship tasks. However, I’m making a conscious effort to improve and balance both better.”

What’s your ultimate goal in your career?

“My ultimate goal in my career is to first build a strong foundation in IT and then specialise, either in cybersecurity or programming. These are areas I’m really interested in and excited to explore further.”

What advice would you give to anyone looking to become an apprentice?

“My advice would be to stay open-minded and be ready to learn. Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience while studying, so take every chance to ask questions, get involved, and learn from those around you. It’s also important to be patient with yourself as you grow in the role. Skills and confidence will build over time.”
