Apprentice Spotlight: Alexandra Broad, Trainee Quantity Surveyor

12 February 2025

Meet Alexandra, our Trainee Quantity Surveyor!

What is your current role, and how long have you been with FFT?

“I’m a Trainee/Assistant Quantity Surveyor and have been working at FFT for just over 3 years.”

Why did you choose to do an Apprenticeship?

“I chose to pursue an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain practical experience in the same industry as my degree while also exploring the career opportunities it could open up for me. Studying for a BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship Degree allows me to develop the essential knowledge and skills while applying them directly in a real-world setting.”

Why is FFT a good Practice to do an apprenticeship with?

“FFT has supported me throughout my apprenticeship, continuously encouraging me to perform at my best while also understanding the challenges of balancing full-time work with a degree.”

What is your favourite part of your role?

“My favourite part is being able to maximise the experience of working within the industry whilst still learning about it from two different perspectives. On one hand, university provides the essential knowledge needed for the role, while on the other, real-world experience offers insights that can’t be taught in a classroom.”

What has been the highlight of your apprenticeship so far?

“Successfully completing all my assignments on time and maintaining strong performance, while overcoming my initial reservations and building more confidence each day.”

What has been the biggest challenge in your apprenticeship so far?

“The workload and time commitment have been the most challenging aspects, but I’ve worked hard to balance them as much as possible. Each day, I’m learning new ways to manage my time effectively and maintain a healthy work-life balance.”

What is your ultimate goal in your career?

“It’s ever-changing, and new goals come to mind all the time, as far as an ultimate goal, I just want to do the best I can whilst still enjoying it.”

What advice would you give to anyone looking to become an apprentice?

“Choosing the apprenticeship route, without question, provides the best opportunity to gain knowledge and experience over the 4-5 year course. Unlike a traditional 3-year degree, an apprenticeship offers hands-on experience that gives you a significant advantage in the workplace.”
